About Ellen
Hi, I am Ellen Reiss-Goldfarb, RDN, CEDS-C and welcome to Nutrition By Ellen! Who am I? I am a Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist and have been in practice for over 20 years.
I’m also a CEDS-C which means that I’m a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist & Consultant. The CEDS-C certification is accredited by the International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals (IAEDP), which works to promote standards of excellence within the field of eating disorders. I am also a wife and mother of two beautiful teenage girls and a Standard Poodle.
I am originally from New York and moved to California in the mid 1990s. I have always had a passion for nutrition and have a history of experience working in the food service industry and weight management before and during my college education. After I graduated and moved to California, I started working in hospitals and nursing homes and actually was the Clinical Nutrition Manager for two very big hospitals here in Los Angeles. I then took up consulting and landed at an inpatient psychiatric facility where there was an eating disorder unit. I then decided to open my own private practice and have been doing that ever since.
My objective is to assist people in achieving their personal goals through nutrition education, as well as supporting their efforts in attaining balance in all areas of their lives. I like to empower my clients that they can do this work on their own once they get the tools they need from me! My private practice focuses on providing nutritional therapy and guidance for people of all ages who suffer from eating disorders and distorted body image issues. Besides my specialized work with eating disorders, I also treat women that have hormone imbalance issues which include PCOS and problems with fertility. Some of my other clients see me for help with obtaining a healthier lifestyle and overall wellness, issues with diabetes, heart disease, digestive disorders, gastrointestinal issues, pregnancy, GERD, high blood pressure, food allergies, vegetarianism, and others.
Nutrition Therapy: We will take a look at your thoughts and feelings that are connected to your relationship with food and your body. Together, we will assess any distorted thoughts that have challenged you in the past and any behaviors that transpired from them. Together, we will work through fears and challenges so that we can get you to a place where you can freely nourish your body without the guilt and shame that sometimes comes attached to eating.
HAES: I see people of all ages, races and genders and practice a Health at Every Size (HAES) approach to treatment. What is HAES®? It is a continuously evolving alternative to the “weight-centered” approaches that are currently and historically being advertised to the public and instead supports clients of all sizes. It is also a movement and philosophy to promote size -acceptance, to end weight discrimination and to lesson the cultural obsession with weight loss and thinness.
Intuitive Eating: I am a Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor and I participated for many years doing supervision sessions and completed all requirements with Elyse Resch, who is co-auther and co-founder of “Intuitive Eating”. What is Intuitive Eating? It is a style of eating that promotes a healthy attitude towards food and body image. It is a way of eating that helps create peace with food. It focuses on eating when you are hungry and stopping when you are satisfied, nurturing your body vs. starving it and helping you find the weight your body is meant to be at.
I have been with the Korea Institute of Martial Arts since 1996 and while I was pregnant with my first daughter I had to take a break from my black belt exam. After a long break, I am finally back and hoping to finish and receive my Black Belt by July of 2021. Martial Arts is one of the many holistic and alternative ways I like to approach life , using mind, body and spirit.
I am also a documentary filmmaker and one of my long-term passionate goals is to complete a documentary film that I have created about the diet industry, fad diets and the impact it has on our society and eating disorders. Keep on the look-out for it… coming soon!
I am an active member of several professional organizations. I am on the board of the South Bay Eating Disorder Coalition, including: The International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals (IAEDP), The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, The California Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics , Nutrition Entrepreneurs practice group (NE), Dietetics in Developmental and Psychiatric Disorders, LA Task Force on Eating Disorders(LATFED), Association For Diversity and Health (ASDAH), and a proud member of The International Federation of Eating Disorders Dietitians (IFEDD).
“With all of the mixed messages in the media about diet, nutrition, supplements and health, I like to bring the latest information to my practice so that I can provide clarity and accuracy to my clients and to the community.”
